Sony DCR-TRV19 MiniDV camcorder overview & test

One of the last really good MiniDV camcorders from Sony around 2003, before they downsized the image sensor and started eliminating features like the accessory shoe and microphone, headphone, and S-video jacks. The DCR-TRV19 is small, easy to use, has excellent low light sensitivity, and is a real bargain buy these days. The DCR-TRV22 has the same performance and size but a few more frills, such as a color viewfinder, Memory Stick slot for saving photos and low-res videos, and an AV-input feature for capturing analog composite and S-Video sources.
Video Rating: 4 / 5

  2. The first part was recorded using a Sony CCD-TR940 Hi8 camcorder. The rest is sample footage from the DCR-TRV19 itself.

  7. Very useful: headphone jack, mic jack, viewfinder (color on mine), quiet motor, hot shoe, fast rewind, big ass battery (on mine, about 5 hours 4 minutes).
Useful: nightshot, low light sensitivity (not as good on mine), fuzzy hand strap :)
Not too useful: memory stick video, USB streaming, the memory stick included with the camera, the firewire (my computer is shitty and has no firewire), narrower field of view than the TRV 19.

    Mine is a TRV33.

  11. random question out of the blue: is it even a conceivable idea for someone to make a DV to USB 3.0 wire (since USB 3.0 is a little bit faster than FireWire…I think anyways)?

  12. my DCR TRV33 didn’t have the little sticker on it when I got it :( lol first world problems. I enjoy messing with the nightshot and bringing it to my cousin’s house and hunting for ghosts lol.

  13. one thing I like about this one, it is one of the very very few digital camcorders that can show the date and time in the recording (when using a capture card) and it can do titling, I didn’t even think it was possible with miniDV camcorders…the titling, but holy crap.

  14. I have decided to get the TRV33 (for the nightshot and the option to put on a fisheye as well as the AV inputs) for the same price you got the TRV19.

  15. The TRV33 was a more fancy model, with a higher-resolution image sensor (but narrower field of view and worse low-light sensitivity), color viewfinder, analog video capture capability, and Memory Stick slot. You can look up the specs on Sony’s eSupport web site.
