There's more on the way this weekend. We're trying to squeeze in a wilderness camp near Kelso Dunes this month.

<pb:thumb height="105" width="140">http://www.jcurranphotography.com/photoblog0708/2007/12/05/165244t_rainbow2007.jpg</pb:thumb>

Afton Canyon Campground

Our original intention was to camp at Rainbow Basin. However, because of it's close proximity to Ft. Irwin, the explosions from the nearby range were very intrusive. The dog was terrified, so we had to regroup. We've always wanted to camp at Afton Canyon, and since it was only about an hour's drive away, off we went. We were a little leery because of this area's reputation for ORVs, but the campground was deserted the Tuesday after Veteran's Day. This is the first time we've camped at a developed campground where we were the only occupants. We enjyed the solitude for 24 hours, after which our fellow campers began to pour in.

<pb:thumb height="105" width="140">http://www.jcurranphotography.com/photoblog0708/2007/11/16/124852t_aftoncanyoncampground2.jpg</pb:thumb>

Shana, The Wolfdog

The Desert was pretty warm for November. Shana enjoyed playing in the Mojave River. Afton Canyon is one of two places that the Mojave, which is normally an underground river, stays permanently surfaced. We went last week, and this picture is very deceptive in terms of the conditions. It was sunny and temperate during the day, around 73 degrees. The night was a little chilly at about 35. We woke up Tuesday morning to see this misty scene. Later that day, we hiked the Cougar Crest Trail, which we have always wanted to do. Shana enjoyed the hike, but was dragging me towards the parking lot and her water at the end.
